La Nique à Satan se déroule dans une petite ville surannée sur fond d’incessantes querelles, et sur laquelle plane la menace de la terrible sorcière Bergougne. L’intervention de Jean des Lunes, poète-musicien armé de sa flûte magique permettra de sauver la cité de sa destruction. Composé par Frank Martin sur un texte d’Albert Rudhardt, La Nique à Satan est un « spectacle d’inspiration populaire ». L’histoire imaginée par Albert Rudhardt, aux allures de conte pour enfant, mêle ironie, profondeur, cocasserie et naïveté. Frank Martin réussit le tour de force de créer une musique populaire, drôle et pittoresque, tout en composant une partition savante à l’instrumentation riche et raffinée.
Créée en 1933 au Grand Théâtre de Genève, l'œuvre reprend vie dans une version rassemblant un chœur d’hommes, un chœur de femmes, un chœur d’enfants, 4 solistes, un ensemble instrumental de 25 musiciens et des comédiennes et comédiens, sur une mise en espace de Benjamin Knobil.
