Dido and Aeneas est probablement l'opéra baroque le plus célèbre mais peu connaissent l'œuvre dont l'opéra s'inspire. Venus and Adonis fut composé par John Blow, le maître de Purcell, en 1681 pour le roi d'Angleterre. Racontant les amours malheureuses de la reine de l'Amour et du jeune chasseur Adonis, cet opéra est véritable bijou injustement éclipsé par le génie de Purcell.
